Business Requirements for Agent-Based M&A Process Automation

This blog is in the Top 25 M&A blogs worldwide according to Feedspot

The integration of artificial intelligence, particularly in its manifestation as intelligent agents, is expected to fundamentally alter the landscape of mergers and acquisitions. Its potential to change M&A could be automating workflows, significantly enhancing the accuracy of processes, and substantially accelerating the speed of transactions. But how can this be achieved? Which agents should we build? What are the right agents from a business process perspective? How do these agents collaborate?

An in-depth knowledge of the business tasks required for the successful development and deployment of such automation can greatly support organizations in adopting solutions that are both impactful and suited to their distinct operational demands. The M&A reference model is perfectly suited for this task. Let us take a closer look at the essential components that constitute this transformative process:

1. Understanding the Automation Needs

Operational Efficiency: It is imperative to meticulously identify the specific areas within the M&A process where the implementation of automation technologies can lead to substantial time savings and a marked reduction in errors, particularly in critical tasks such as document review and comprehensive data analysis that are often labor-intensive and prone to human mistakes.

Scalable Solutions: It is essential to ensure that the automation solution being considered possesses the inherent capability to effectively handle a diverse range of deal sizes and complexities, all while maintaining optimal performance levels without any degradation in efficiency or effectiveness, regardless of the scale of operations.

2. Data Model, Data Management and Data integration

Data Model: Which data are needed to be served to agents? The M&A reference model contains a data model with 973 data objects used in the M&A process. This could be used to create a data schema that agents acting in the M&A process can leverage.

Secure Data Management: Any solutions that are developed and implemented must be in strict compliance with the various data privacy laws and regulations that govern the handling of sensitive financial information, ensuring that all sensitive details are managed with the utmost care and security.

It is important to provide effective integration with established enterprise systems, which will aid in real-time data interchange and make certain that all pertinent information transitions effortlessly among systems without any disruptions or hold-ups.

3. Agents to be implemented from a business view

To identify the types of agents to be implemented, the M&A reference model provides the concept of roles. Roles are typical personas acting in an M&A process like “M&A Lead“, “Valuation expert“ or “Business owner“ which are a perfect first shot at the agents that would have to be implemented. The M&A reference model contains 54 roles resulting of 54 agents to be built for the M&A process. But there are more agents, as i will discuss in a later blog post.

4. Collaboration of agents in the M&A process

Roles define the actors of an M&A process, they represent competent personas. Here, roles like “M&A Lead“ or “Valuation expert“ could be assigned to agents, users or both. Agents collaborate with each other and users to accomplish work in the M&A process. The M&A reference model contains tasks with assigned roles which can be used. So, each task in the M&A process defines which agents and users should be collaborating.

5. Implementing tasks for the agents

Here, the concept of tasks in the M&A reference model comes in handy. Each task in the model has assigned roles, works on a subset of data objects of the data model. In addition, each task has goals and objectives. So the agents collaborating know which data to be used and they can provide a business-optimal solution for the task by reaching goals and objectives of the task.

Conclusion

The strategic deployment of agent-based automation within M&A processes is poised to maximize operational efficiencies while providing insightful, data-driven strategies that can significantly enhance business outcomes. Addressing these fundamental business requirements based on the M&A reference model is crucial for the successful implementation of automation solutions and for achieving optimal results in M&A transactions.
